What is like hichhiking in Japan?

One thing you don't find very often in Japan is a hitchhiker.  During all those years I grew up in Japan, I have not seen anyone holding up a piece of cardboard with destination written on it, not even once.  It's just not something people do in this land. It is not because hitchhiking is unsafe, but most likely because it is considered a form of begging.  John experimented with this strange behavior in the eyes of the Japanese nation.  The results were nothing but positive.
