People splurge on Osechi, the colorful New Year day dishes packed together in special boxes called jubako. Mothers around Japan are extremely busy days before New Year to prepare this annual feast, but there are always alternatives to labor-intensive cooking. Osechi can be bought all cooked, packed and ready to eat at department stores or online. They range from a few hundred dollars to upwards of several thousand dollars. Paolo and Maiko are ready to open their $1,000 Osechi.
